Germantown Academy is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school located on a beautiful 126-acre campus in the Fort Washington suburbs near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Position Purpose: The Computer Science PK-12 Department Chair oversees curriculum development and implementation of computer science across three divisions and teaches computer science courses in the Upper School. We are seeking candidates for a full-time position to join our community beginning August 2024. This is a 10-month position with an excellent array of benefits and a competitive salary. 100% tuition remission is available for a total of two children who qualify for admission and for whom space is available.

We are seeking candidates who… 

  • Have at least two years of experience teaching students in grades 9-12 using best pedagogical practices 
  • Hold a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science (Advanced degrees preferred.)
  • Have working knowledge of contemporary programming languages (Python, Java, JavaScript) and experience with some combination of web development, game/app development, robotics, and data processing
  • Are excited to work with and support upper school-aged students (Grades 9-12)
  • Have experience with multi-level and differentiated instruction within a single classroom space
  • Demonstrate a commitment to student-centered learning 
  • Demonstrate a collaborative and growth mindset as a teacher and professional 
  • Possess the cultural competency necessary for working with a diverse population in an equitable and inclusive community 
  • Demonstrate the flexibility to use technology in support of student learning and other professional responsibilities 
  • Communicate well, both in writing and verbally, with colleagues, students, and families 
  • Model a culture of flexible, continuous learning to challenge and support students 

Core Job Responsibilities 

This role is a full-time teaching position with the following major responsibilities: 

  • Oversee curriculum development and implementation of computer science instruction for grades 6-12
  • Teach AP Computer Science, Introduction to Computer Science, and other related courses as needed (Upper School)
  • Collaborate with Lower School and Middle School administrators and teachers in the development and teaching of computer science in those divisions
  • Plan and implement computer science “outreach” programming and events such as CSEdWeek and the CS Symposium
  • Fulfill Department Chair duties, including the supervision and evaluation of other teachers and participation in divisional and all-school curriculum committees
  • Participate in divisional and all-school STEAM program development and activities
  • Help plan and implement faculty professional development in computer science
  • Serve as a computer science resource for the following subject areas across the school: robotics, engineering, artificial/augmented intelligence
  • Serve as a homeroom co-advisor for a group of Upper School students 
  • Be a leader in the school’s co-curricular program in meaningful ways outside the classroom by coaching, leading extra-curricular activities, etc.
  • Engage in other responsibilities including attending regular faculty meetings, professional learning communities, in-service days, and other supervision duties as assigned
